AI chatbot vs AI employee: what is the difference?
A chatbot answers questions. An AI employee finishes a job: it answers, collects the details, takes the action such as booking or logging the lead, and hands off what it should not decide. These are working definitions I use, not an industry standard. The line is whether work gets completed.
Two terms, one test.
- AI chatbot: software that replies to questions in a chat window. Success is a correct answer.
- AI employee: software given a role, rules and tools, so it completes a task end to end. Success is a finished job, such as a booked appointment.
- The test: after the conversation ends, did something happen in your business, or does a person still have to do it?
What turns a chatbot into an employee.
- A role. What it handles and what it refuses.
- Tools. A calendar, a CRM or a message to you, so it can act.
- Rules. When to book, when to transfer, when to take a message.
- Disclosure and records. It says it is an AI and keeps a transcript.
Two from my own work.
My AI chat agent answers website visitors and qualifies leads. My AI phone agent, Amanda, answers calls on my pest-control line, qualifies the caller and books. Hear a real call to judge the work yourself. Which label fits is your call. The completed work is what matters.
Pick by the job, not the label.
- If visitors mostly need information, a chatbot is enough.
- If a missed call or unanswered inquiry costs you a job, you need something that completes the task.
- Prices for mine: chat agent $299 a month plus $500 setup, phone agent $499 a month plus $500 setup. (Source: price comments in src/checkout.ts.)
