Here is the version of this story going around: OpenAI now weights Yelp more heavily than Google reviews. I went looking for the source on that specific claim and could not find one. Nobody has published a study comparing how ChatGPT weighs Yelp against Google reviews.
What is documented is different, and honestly more actionable: OpenAI licensed Yelp’s data, and Yelp shows up in AI local answers far more than most owners realize. That is enough to change what you do this quarter. The comparative claim is not, so I am not going to repeat it.
What Is Actually Documented
Yelp is licensing “reviews, ratings, photos, and business information” to OpenAI. Yelp’s own Request a Quote feature is being surfaced inside ChatGPT local-services searches, so someone can contact a service provider without leaving the chat. Yelp’s CEO Jeremy Stoppelman says “Yelp branding and links will appear when OpenAI uses its content, although OpenAI controls how that experience is presented.”
OpenAI licenses Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details for local answers, including Yelp's Request a Quote flow inside ChatGPT.

What Is Not Documented
“OpenAI weights Yelp more than Google reviews.” No study I could find makes that comparison. The citation research compares Yelp against other directories: BBB, Angi, Thumbtack, HomeAdvisor, Nextdoor, and deliberately leaves Google out, because Google is not a third-party cited source in the same way. Anyone stating a Yelp-versus-Google weighting ratio is making it up or repeating someone who did.
The Whitespark study people cite for this. It is about review-platform frequency in Bing Places, from September 2025, before the OpenAI-Yelp deal existed. It does not support a 2026 claim about ChatGPT.
The Yelp v. Google lawsuit is a separate thing. Yelp sued Google in August 2024 over local search practices. It is not evidence of anything about OpenAI, and conflating the two is how a rumor gets built.
Why This Still Matters More Than the Rumor
For fifteen years, local visibility meant one thing: rank in Google, get reviews on your Google Business Profile. Most service-business owners I talk to have a good GBP and a Yelp page they abandoned in 2019 with four reviews and an old photo.
That neglected Yelp page is now feeding an answer engine. When someone asks ChatGPT for a pest control company in your city, the data behind that answer may well be Yelp’s, and your abandoned page is what it has to work with. Meanwhile your competitor with 60 recent Yelp reviews looks, to the model, like the obvious recommendation.
The asymmetry is the opportunity. Google reviews are a crowded fight in most local markets. Yelp, in a lot of home-service categories, is a ghost town your competitors also abandoned.
What To Actually Do
Claim and finish the Yelp page. Hours, service area, categories, real photos, services list. Free, and it is the data being licensed.
Restart review requests on Yelp specifically. Do not solicit: Yelp’s terms prohibit asking for reviews, and violating that gets your reviews filtered into invisibility. What is allowed: telling customers you are on Yelp, putting the badge on your site and email signature, and letting people who want to review you find the place to do it.
Keep your NAP identical everywhere. Name, address, phone, matched character for character across Yelp, Google, and your website. Answer engines reconcile entities across sources; a mismatch is how you become two half-businesses instead of one.
Ask ChatGPT about your own category and city. Right now. See who it names and what it says about you. That is your actual AI visibility baseline, and it takes two minutes.
Do not abandon Google. Nothing here says Google matters less. It says a second surface started mattering, and it is one you have probably been ignoring.
The Honest Summary
An AI answer engine is now quoting a review platform most service businesses stopped maintaining years ago. That is a real, dated, sourced change, and the response to it is cheap: claim the page, finish the profile, keep the reviews current, check what the machines say about you.
If you want that checked and fixed rather than added to your list, that is what local visibility work is, at $249/mo. And if you want to know where AI engines currently mention you at all, the website health retainer starts by measuring it.
